Having a success plan is just one of the many things a budding entrepreneur needs to do. Sure, you can find success without a plan, but traveling is so much easier with a map, isn’t it? Let me start off by quickly explaining what a success plan really is.
Basically, a success plan consists of a specific goal, an exact time frame you set for yourself to reach that goal, and steps detailing how you are going to get there. The more specific your plan is the better off you’ll be. So, say that you want to earn $50,000 in six months. That’s your goal and your time frame, and now you just need to come up with how you are going to get there.
Why is it important to have a plan for your success? The reasons, based on my experience, are two-fold. First, it helps to have a plan to follow. Second, it’s motivating to read the plan from time to time. Let’s take a look at each of these in turn.
Having a plan
Would you travel across a foreign country without a plan? Would you build a house without a plan? Would you undertake any large and/or dangerous task without first having a plan? Probably not. Why then, do many people start businesses (or business projects) without a plan?
Your business and success are important. Having a plan is a natural progression from idea to action. Building a business needs the same care and attention as building anything else important.
Even if you have already built a business, you still need to plan for your growth and for new projects. Creating a success plan can point you in the right direction and get you doing the things you need to do.
Find Motivation in Your Plan
I recently wrote a success plan for a new business project I’m starting. It’s a simple plan, without any bells or whistles. But it’s still important. I read my plan every day, and it motivates me to reach my goal.
My plan is saved to my laptop desktop. I keep the desktop clean, and right now it only has three things on it: The recycle bin and two important documents. My success plan is one of those important documents. Whenever I sit down at my laptop I open up that document and read my plan. It keeps me focused on my goal and makes me want to try even harder to get there.
I suggest you keep your plan somewhere equally conspicuous. Either print it out and stick it up on your wall where you will see it every day, or keep it in an obvious place on your computer. The point is that if you look at your plan every day, it will be in the forefront of your mind. It will be right there, gently pushing you to complete it.
Having a success plan is important, and it should be your first step whenever you start a new business or important project.
